James Calado targets more Silverstone glory
It has been a golden period in James Calado’s career over the last few seasons and what better way to start a new FIA WEC campaign than at his home circuit: Silverstone.
The British racer, who has driven for Ferrari since 2014, was crowned the WEC champion in 2017 alongside AF Corse team-mate Alessandro Pier Guidi.
This was followed up by a strong runners-up position during the Super Season. However, the highlight was undoubtedly a memorable victory in the 24 Hours of Le Mans with his crew-mates Pier Guidi and Daniel Serra.
Apart from having to expand his trophy cabinet in recent months, Calado is looking forward to defending the LMGTE Pro crown at Silverstone where the No.51 AF Corse Ferrari 488 GTE Evo took the victory 12 months ago.
“We won last year at Silverstone and obviously it was awesome. It was something I’d been wanting for a while,” recalls Calado. “I think this is now my sixth year in WEC, so to get it last year was a great achievement and fingers crossed we can do it again.”
Calado attests that the challenge of Silverstone never loses its appeal.
“No matter what car you are in at Silverstone its still one of the best tracks to drive,” he says. “I was actually the first winner on the new circuit, so I’ve got a lot of experience of this layout. It was in a Formula 3 race back in 2009 and that’s when they changed it. So, no matter what you are in it’s great, and I look forward to seeing a lot of British people at the same time.”
“Obviously, the British fans are superb and to have that support for all the home drivers and being a Ferrari driver as well is something very special,” concludes Calado.
