Tomczyk Relishing Silverstone Debut
BMW star to make first ever appearance at Home of British motorsport..
Along with Monza, Nürburgring and Le Mans, Silverstone is right up there in the highest echelons of iconic racetrack and has been for many decades.
While the vast majority of drivers on the grid this weekend have dozens of appearances at the Home of British Motorsport, BMW Team MTEK driver Martin Tomczyk will be making his race debut here today.
This fact seems remarkable for the driver who has been a professional racer for almost two decades.
“It is just one of those strange things that means I have never raced here,” said the 36 year-old who shares the No.81 BMW Team MTEK with Nicky Catsburg.
“Many times I have raced at Brands Hatch in DTM but never here. I must say that I am really looking forward to it because my teammates confirm it to be a great track.
“It looks open and quick and good for overtaking. In many ways it looks like the classic track I’ve have been told it has always been.”
Tomcyck believes that the advice of his teammates and the guidance of his engineering team.
“You really are able to get up to speed pretty quickly and by the third or fourth lap everything clicks so it is not a major disadvantage not having previous experience of a track,” he said.
“My data engineer and also my teammate Nicky (Catsburg) who has experience of Silverstone will be very helpful, so I am assuming it will be a quick process to get up to speed.”
Tomczyk believes that the BMW M8 GTE will keep on learning from its first season of FIA WEC competition in the LMGTE Pro as the Super Season continues.
“We saw in Spa that we were not as sorted out as we hoped but at Le Mans we did a good step forward on set-up. We anticipate making progress at all the WEC events and it will be fascinating to see what sort of race we will have this Sunday.”
